"My design of this Noe Valley custom home is influenced by shingle-style architect Ernest Coxhead,"according to Mathews. "I lived in Berkeley when I studied architecture at UC. The Maybeck houses on the north and south sides of campus were magical — really an inspiration. Another influence was one of my favorite designs by Frank Lloyd Wright — his Home and Studio in my hometown — Oak Park, Illinois. I used to give tours there back in the sixties, before it was restored to its 1909 condition."

"The Noe Street house integrates bold and playful shingle-style forms with modern interiors, materials and details. The design's scale, gable roof, and its use of trim and substantial window casings complements nearby houses. Neighbors were very pleased, an important consideration in San Francisco!."

"The open, modern interior on four levels uses a palette of white oak, cherry and neutral plaster. The interior layout, with home office, suits contemporary living. This project was featured in Fine Homebuilding Magazine in 1998."
